A Stroll with Shannon along Wireless Avenue to Next-Generation Plaza...

Abstract: The spectacular success of MIMO systems may be attributed to the fact that the MIMO capacity increases linearly with the number of transmit antennas, provided that the number of receive antennas is equal to the number of transmit antennas. With the further proviso that the total transmit power is increased proportionately to the number of transmit antennas, a linear - rather than logarithmic - capacity increase is achieved upon increasing the transmit power [1, 2]

"But Dr Shannon - how can we approach this vast capacity potential in practice?"

The list of practical limitations is daunting...

• How can we physically accommodate a large number of antennas on a compact mobile device, especially multiple RF chains?
• How do we circumvent or harness the signal correlation of the closely-spaced antennas? 
• How do we estimate the huge number of MIMO links?
• What is the pilot-overhead and complexity-overhead of estimating numerous MIMO-links? Is pilot-symbol assisted coding an attractive design option?
• Is there a way round high-complexity coherent detection at all in the context of large-scale MIMO systems? 
• Could the radical parallel computing capability of quantum communications be invoked for mitigating the complexity imposed [3]?
• Or is non-coherentmultiple-symbol sphere-detection a realistic design alternative, which dispenses with channel estimation?
• How do we best exploit the spatial domain at all, when creating large-scale multi-functional antenna arrays?

Many of the above-mentioned design-dilemmas and limitations might be circumvented with the aid of Spatial Modulation (SM), where only a single one of the transmit antennas is activated during any symbol interval [4, 5]. This 'win-win saga' continues, since apart from the potential benefit of requiring only a single RF chain, SM also has the potential of implicitly conveying extra bits by inferring say log2(M) bits from the specific index of the activated transmit antenna, as discussed in [4, 5].

This tutorial discusses cognitive radios from the perspective of signal processing. A cognitive radio is defined as a "self-aware and self-reconfigurable SDR capable of learning". A functional architecture that supports these capabilities will be introduced and role of signal processing and machine learning will be identified. The tutorial will be focused on particular signal processing problems that are unique to cognitive radios, in particular those that are associated with spectrum knowledge acquisition: Wideband spectrum scanning, wideband and robust spectrum sensing, compressive sensing, spectral activity detection, signal classification and identification. The unique aspects of these problems in the context of cognitive radios will be emphasized in order to appreciate the challenges to be overcome. Limitations of existing signal processing and machine learning approaches to meet these challenges will be pointed out before discussing in detail both classical statistical signal processing solutions and novel techniques that incorporate machine learning algorithms.

With low latency, high-speed throughput and huge capacity, LTE can meet the requirement not only for people-to-people communicaiton, but also for machine-to-machine (the Internet of Things). LTE owns much stronger ability of spectrum support than 2G/3G network, can provide rich services with excellent user experience for people in urban and rural area. That is why LTE became the most rapid development mobile technology in the past twenty years, Huawei keep investing LTE field since 2009 and became the leading LTE network and solutions vendor in the world. Huawei is willing to take root in Vietnam market, to create bright future together.

Biography: Zhenyu You became Vice President of LTE Marketing in 2013. His responsibilities include LTE Radio Access marketing and branding and promoting the LTE 450MHz technology. Graduating from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Business School in 2004, Zhenyu You first joined Huawei’s Antenna Business Unit as Chief Marketing Officer in 2011, promoting Huawei’s next generation antennas globally and the newest Huawei LTE systems.

Dynamic Resource Allocation for 5G Green HetNet

Abstract: This talk jointly addresses two major issues which are supposed to remain the main concerns of the worldwide research community for at least a decade; (1) Optimization of energy consumption to save the limited energy resources and cope with its increasing demand as well as reducing the worldwide CO2 emission, (2) The need for next generation (5G) mobile communications due to the tremendous trend in increase of data traffic.

Technically speaking, 5G mission is to develop a spectrum- and energy-efficient network which is capable of reaching speeds of 10 Gbps. Specifically, its capability to minimize the energy requirements of web devices and network infrastructure is of utmost importance due to recent concerns for energy consumption in ICT industry. With the rapid growth in the mobile communications sector, the carbon footprint of the ICT sector will grow up to 1.43 Giga-tons by 2020 and mobile communications sector is responsible for 201 Mega-tons of emissions by 2020 (14% of the whole ICT sector). Already, EU targets a 20% reduction in the energy consumption of IT industry by 2020. At the beginning of this talk, we discuss what we have achieved so far by four generations of wireless networks and what we may expect from the upcoming 5G. The newest state-of-the-art proposals and specifications discussed by leading international wireless R&D companies for 5G will then be presented. Later, we introduce the energy-efficiency (EE) issue for wireless communications and infrastructure from different perspectives. These techniques brighten the horizon for 5G system design. In fact, during last decade most researchers have focused on spectrum-efficiency (SE), and EE was not considered by 3GPP as an important performance indicator until very recently. As a result recent wireless standards such as LTE have near optimal SE, with the aid of some advanced techniques such as turbo coding, while they ignore the EE issue. The main problem is how to balance EE and SE metrics in radio resource management (RRM), because they are usually not consistent and sometimes conflict with each other. Finally, we will present some recent energy-efficient RRM modules for 5G Heterogeneous Networks (HetNet). Interference management is one of the main issues of concern in 5G HetNet and RRM module design and will be discussed accordingly.

 

Speaker Biography: Abolfazl Mehbodniya received his Ph.D degree from the National Institute of Scientific Research-Energy, Materials, and Telecommunications (INRS-EMT), University of Quebec, Montreal, QC, Canada in 2010. From 2010 to 2012 he was the Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) postdoctoral fellow and since January 2013 an Assistant Professor at graduate school of engineering, Tohoku university. Dr. Mehbodniya, was a visiting fellow at National Taiwan University (NTU), Taiwan and RWTH Aachen University, Germany in 2009 and 2010, respectively. He has over 40 published conference and journal papers in the areas of radio resource management, sparse channel estimation, interference mitigation, short-range communications, 4G/5G design, OFDM, heterogeneous networks, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and fuzzy logic techniques with applications to algorithm and protocol design in wireless communications. Dr. Mehbodniya is the recipient of several grants and fellowships from Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Quebec Research fund on Natural Science and Engineering (FQRNT), JSPS, KDDI foundation, Luxembourg Ministry of Culture, Higher Education and Research and National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT).

The physics and mathematics of cellular wireless propagation

The objective of this presentation is to illustrate that an electromagnetic macro modeling can properly predict the path loss exponent in a mobile cellular wireless communication. This represents the variation of the path loss with distance from the base station antenna. Specifically, we illustrate that the path loss exponent in a cellular wireless communication is three preceded by a slow fading region and followed by the fringe region where the path loss exponent is four. The size of these regions is determined on the heights of the base station transmitting antennas and the receiving antennas. Theoretically this is illustrated through the analysis of radiation from a vertical electric dipole situated over a horizontal imperfect ground plane as first considered by Sommerfeld in 1909. To start with, the exact analysis of radiation from the dipole is made using the Sommerfeld formulation. The semi-infinite integrals encountered in this formulation are evaluated using a modified saddle point method for field points moderate to far distances away from the source point to predict the appropriate path loss exponents. In addition, Okumura's experimental data and extensive data taken from seven different base stations in urban environments at two different frequencies will validate the theory. Experimental data reveal that a macro modeling of the environment using an appropriate electromagnetic analysis can accurately predict the path loss exponent for the propagation of radio waves in a cellular wireless communication scenario.

 

It is also shown that an electromagnetic macro modeling of the environment can provide simulation results comparable to the data as one would obtain in an actual drive test measurement for a cellular environment. The input parameters for the electromagnetic model can be generated using only the physical parameters of the environment like the height of the transmitting and receiving antennas over the ground, their tilts toward the ground, and the electrical parameters of the ground. Such analysis can provide realistic plots for the received power versus separation distance between the receiving and the transmitting base station antennas. The novelty of the electromagnetic analysis technique proposed in this paper lies in its ability to match the simulation and measurement results without any statistical or empirical curve fitting or an adhoc choice of a reference distance. This illustration is made using real data measured for cellular networks in western India and Srilanka.
